    Can you identify this Lamp? The vintage? I'm trying to track down what it may have been used for. The Ceramic wick holder is marked "Sherwoods Limited" with the trademark showing 3 trees and the word "Sound". The wick adjustment says "British Make". I have been told it may be a ships lamp or a mining lamp.

      Hi there,
      I had this exact lantern about 4 months ago. It was my neatest find so far. I found it at a thrift store and the moment I saw it, I knew it was special. Atleast, I think it is. I researched and looked long and hard and finally found it's identity. I put it on Ebay and it sold for $150.00. It is an Antique Brass Railroad Lantern and I am not exactly sure what used for, but I figured I might let you know what I got for it. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks

      Thank You for your response. I got the following response from another sight where I posed the same question: "What you have is a ship's binnacle lamp. You will find that there is no steel anywhere in it, it is all made of brass, so that it would not upset the compass. The top is a machined casting, and fits snugly into a hole in the binnacle top, and the lamp then illuminates the compass for night time sailing." Mystery Solved.

      Hi - i have just obtained a John Bruce and Sons ship,s binnacle - and it has one of these same oil lights fitted - it certainly is from a ship,s binnacle and is very old - a similar binnacle to mine was sold in the USA in October 2012 and they listed it as "Museum Quality" (post 185o) - this you can check yourself if you wish. The light is fitted in a special container permanently mounted on the top copper attachment and is situated above the "green" magnetic ball

      SteveG does your lamp have glass on the door? mine does not

      Hi to tom, and Dean - yes the lantern that i have is complete with glass - the binnacle that I bought that had this lamp has a "brass plate" saying made in Liverpool. The Maritime Museum i Liverpool cannot find any record of the binnacle being made in Liverpool.
      The complete binnacle with all attachments is good to look at.
