This is an early war lithographic carte de visite (CDV) of General Lee. The lithograph shows a clean faced Lee pre- war wearing a Federal uniform.

The lithographic CDVs are much less desirable (and valuable) than photographic images. This particular image would sell in the $25- $50 range, while a photographic image of Lee will bring several hundred.

Neat photo, Scott. Where do you get a photo like this one? Auction? Are they hard to come by? I'm interested in the Lee family. My second great grandfather's second wife was Mary, first cousin to the General. I don't have a picture of either one of them, although I have photos of their graves. Their daughter, Laura, is the half-sister mentioned in the letter of my posting, CASSIUS. Interestingly, Mary had three step-sons who fought for the north during the Civil War, including my great grandfather, Cassius.

I buy my items online, at antique malls and shops, and at shows.

These litho views are not particularly hard to find-- you can probably find one on ebay available now!

Do a search for "lee cdv".

      Good luck,

Here is one on ebay now-- IT IS NOT MINE and I know or have any connection to the lister:

      http://www.ebay.com/itm/1860s-Civil-War-Louis-Prang-CDV-Sized-Card-Gen-Robert-E-Lee-CSA-Confederate-/380371434909?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item588fe77d9d

This particular cdv has considerable foxing to the image area.

      Thanks, Scott!

      No problem.

You should be able to find one in better condition-- the foxing is excessive on that example.
