Wonderful stingray!! While on vacation at the beach, this past summer, we were frequently ran out of the ocean by lifeguards due to heavy infestation of stingrays. The first time I've seen that happen in all of our many vacations down in the "Low Country".

jscott0363, The caution exhibited by the lifeguards probably was warranted.

Wildlife conservationist and TV personality Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray. Sure, he probably wouldn't have been killed by a stingray if he hadn't been handling it, but it illustrated the dangers of proximity.

      jscott0363, My bad:

      *snip*

      JFB

Data Scientist, former Marine Scientist, lover of science

Steve Irwin jumped into the water from a boat, directly above the 2 meter (6.5 ft) stingray.

Stingrays only ‘sting’ when they feel threatened. This commotion frightened the stingray and it reacted by striking Steve Irwin, who had essentially just jumped into the water directly above it.

This is an animal that’s survived some time in the wild, in the Great Barrier Reef, and reached its size of 6.5ft.

It was frightened and most likely startled and perceived Steve Irwin’s approach as a threat. It immediately defended itself by striking him with its barbed tale.

Stingrays usually only sting people when they’re accidentally stepped on. They are generally quite docile, and when exposed to people frequently, they even become friendly.

Their barb is a survival defense mechanism. It takes time for their barb to grow back once used. So they only use it when they feel truly threatened.

If Steve Irwin had been a hunter, this stingray most definitely would have saved its own life.

It was startled, caught off guard by the way he jumped into the water above it, and perceived him as a threat.

It acted immediately defending itself, and just so happened to strike him in the heart.

      *snip*

For your fabulous praise and comments I thank you all

DejaVu, I was very excited to find this fish, there are other glass rays but this one has such pretty colors. Have to watch that delicate tail though near the rest of my glass animals

Scott, we had a bummer of a beach year here on LI this yr too, but our warnings were frequent shark sightings. Better safe than sorry right

Dave & Mike, I'm always on the lookout for a different type of animal to post here & this one is quite original in design

keramikos, how well I remember Steve Irwin & his unfortunate accident. I was a big fan of his Australian zoo television program and he had such a wonderful personality. As my mom once told me, an animal is always an animal, and with wildlife you have to be especially cautious because they see everything as predator or prey

      It’s really beautiful!
Whether a delicate fragile glass tail or a deadly barbed tail on a living creature, I think the lesson here could be ‘it’s best to enjoy looking but don’t get near or touch’.
Keramikos, thanks for the Steve Irwin info….that was such a depressing tragic loss.

Thank you Patricia & MishMasher for the kind love for my stingray, and a very Happy New Year to you both!

Patricia thanks so much for your great comment, agree about stingrays - they are much safer to be around in glass form :)

This is a great stingray Jenni, I adore him! Stingrays are definitely dangerous creatures alright as mentioned above but I think in their natural habitat they are so cool and different looking! I especially love his colours, it's so bright and reminiscent of tropical reefs. Very summery and warm in this time of year!

Lauren I had hoped you'd stop by & see this glass stingray, he's my first and it's always nice bring a new animal to this site. It is very colorful and summery, he'd be right at home in the tropical reefs. Lovely comment & description, thank you so much

Lauren & Elaine, much thanks for the kind love as well it's gratefully appreciated
