Is this a blown glass vase ? It stands 14 1/2 inches tall, and 4 across at the base. I don't see any markings on it-any ideas on a maker, age, etc.?? This was hidden under the sink at Grandma's, the inside is pretty dirty. How can I safely clean it, and would it be wise to use it for fresh flowers ? I'd love to know more about it, thanks !

This is a pressed glass opalescent vase that dates from ca. 1910. It is called a swung vase because when the glass was taken from the mould, it was much shorter and swung around in arcs while still hot. Centrifigual force caused the glass to stretch.

Your vase appears to be Northwood's "Thin Rib" or "Wide Rib" pattern. It may be marked in the very bottom of the inside with an underlined N in a cirle. Might be difficult to see, espeically if the vase is dirty. Not all of them were marked.

These can be difficult to clean well. I would suggest putting an Efferdent or similar tablet in it to clean it out. Let it air dry on an angle in a dish rack.

Thank you VERYmuch, I have always wondered about the origins, and after I get it properly cleaned, I'll look for marks.
