I purchased this medicine, snuff bottle with a 'job lot' on ebay a few years ago and have since been told it is authentic (100 years old )and worth a lot of money. Very unusual design of a European portrait , can be viewed upside down
Any ideas how much I could ask....
You might want to post it over at the Snuff Bottle Discussion Forum .. http://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/
I would recommend sending pics to Sotheby's or Skinner's.
Did you find anything out about it? I have the exact same bottle I inherited from my grandmother. Would love to know what you have discovered.
I did email Sotheby's Australia but they said it wasn't of sufficient value to auction, so I don't know what to believe
I've been thinking of taking several of my inherited items that I can't find sufficient info on online to a good appraiser or auction house in Portland. That's the nearest big city to me that would have a really knowledgable appraiser. Good luck to you. I'll let you know if I find anything out.
Polly...
Thought would go ahead and come back to comment as did not see you register to the forum..
The exact type of snuff bottle you have is a porcelan quimper style.
Not so true that these are not of some value.. We have others on the forum more knowledgable with porcelan, but this one looks to me at first glance to have some age.. The period the bottle "could" be from would be known by the characters on the bottom. A little hard for me to make out.. Would be best to post it on the forum so that someone who reads Chinese can decipher..
If it is a bit old as I suspect it is, have seen these bring an average of about 200 - 300.00
Thank you George for your information on my medicine bottle. I've just had a strange comment from Pop_abides but wont answer.
Thank you for telling me the type, 'Quimper' I will now be able to do a little research for myself..
Should I post more pictures on the Forum ?
I have met a gentleman who knows a little about Chinese porcelain and he thinks about 100 years old.
