This early 20th century photograph depicts a small privately owned grocery in Washington, D.C. The image is 6" X 8" and it is on a larger mount.

Inside the store are several of the workers in aprons-- to include an African- American man. There are also three ice delivery men with the large ice tongs over their shoulders.

The store has a good selection of canned goods and cigars (in cases) on the left and fresh fruits and vegetables on the right side.

This photograph came with two certificates for the Retail Grocers Protective Association of Washington D.C.

Reproduction of this image is not authorized.

When I was growing up, there was a corner store that looked just like this. My mom had always joked that the store had been there "since Noah died". As a kid, I just thought it was out of date and in need of a make-over (air-conditioning would have been a bonus too!). BEST ice-cold, bottled Coca Cola around. Can't remember if it was technically Bay St. Louis or Waveland, MS, but I know that Hurricane Katrina finally took it out. Great picture!!!

Thanks thriftfan and thanks for sharing your story down memory lane.

      Sorry that Katrina destroyed it.
