This unsual patriotic photograph is Spanish American War era (1898) and is similar in size to a cabinet card on a dark mount.
Grandpa took out his M1860 Cavalry sword (three branch guard visible) and brandishes it across his chest.
One grandchild holds a large American Flag on a small staff and the other holds a toy rifle.
They are all ready to defend America's interest!

Great picture. You dont still have the M1860 do you? I'd be interested to see what maker is has stamped on the ricasso.
I never had this particular M1860.
I do have an import M1860 that is NOT related to this photograph.
