I am interested in any information on this pen set.
The inside top of the case reads:

    Perfumed Writing Pens
    Arpege & Chanel No.5
    14 KT Gold
    EXCLUSIVE DESIGN

Some of the questions I have are: (does anyone know)

    When they were made?
    How many sets were made?
Were they made for any special occasion?
Any other information would be appreciated!

I know that the perfumes are manufactured by different companies, so am interested in how it came to be that two (possibly competitors) would have their number one product advertised together.

I know that" Arpege" is a 1927 perfume by Lanvin. Along with Coco Chanel's "Chanel No. 5" and Patou's "Joy", it is one of the three best known perfumes in the world.
Chanel No. 5 is the first perfume launched by Parisian couturier Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel (in 1920) and is considered by most as the world's most famous perfume.
The French government reports that a bottle of Chanel No. 5 is sold every thirty seconds and generates sales of $100 million a year. It was developed by Russian-French chemist and perfumer Ernest Beaux.

These are unused pens in the original case.
    Please share any information!

I have this exact set. I tried to sell them on a large online auction that begins with "E", but they stopped the auction and I received an email saying that they were a copyright infringement because they were not made by the companies on the labels. I have not been able to determine if this is true or not. Good luck.

      Thank you for the information

Sorry to inform you, crazytree, but these pens are not authentic and weren't manufactured by either Lanvin or Chanel, ergo the reason lowspeed's listing was pulled.

This doesn't mean you can't enjoy using them. :-)

Here is all the information regarding this pen set, which also is not 14K but gold plated:
      http://www.cleopatrasboudoir.com/apps/blog/show/3791435-arpege-chanel-no-5-perfumed-writing-pens

They are all over the Internet for sale between $15.00 and $30.00.

Thanks to all of you for your information!
I thought it was a bit strange that two competing companies would advertise their most famous products TOGETHER!

This site is so VALUABLE for information! I'm sure glad I didn't try to list them at auction!
It is a really neat set to have in a collection (I like the controversy over them-makes them even MORE collectible to me).
      NOTE:
The beautiful FILIGREE design is the part that IS 14KT gold.
      Thanks again!

      Hi,
I too have the same pen set. It was a promotion at Macy's in New York. I believe it was in the 60's.

Lowspeed & Solver you are both absolutely right!!! I just recently read on some site (can't remember where I read it). That the pen set have no connection to "Channel 5 " Perfume Co., that in fact the Company has been removing them off of E-bay and any other sites that were selling them.. The weird thing about it, like I said in the above article that I am almost positive that I had received them at Macy's Dept. Store at the Perfume Counter in the 60's (in NY)as some kind of promotion. (I know one thing for sure, I never bought them) So it will remain a mystery?????

I have the same set-mint condition-it belonged to my husband's aunt who passed away so I do not know where she got it from. Thank you for the info. I just joined the site today after looking for info about the pen set. Very good site.

You may at any time return your pen for FREE FACTORY SERVICE or replacement (at manufacturers option). Be sure to enclose $1.00 for handling and processing. Mail To: Replacement Refills, P.O. I also have the set. Mine was a Christmas gift in 1976 purchased in Ontario Canada. Not sure why I keep it around, but its fun to know a bit about them. Thanks.

Arpege/Chanel No. 5 Perfumed Writing PensPosted on May 18, 2010 at 10:48 PM

A common product found on ebay and other sales venues is the Arpege/Chanel No. 5 Perfumed Writing Pens.

The pens are ballpoint style and the ink is supposedly scented with the famous perfumes. These pen sets were manufactured in the 1970s.

A 1971 ad reads "Perfumed Writing Pens. Packaging as pictured, beautiful leather covered jewelry boxes. Perfumed refills are specially prepared with Arpege and Chanel No 5 perfume. One writes In Arpege the other In Chanel No. 5. Pens are guaranteed for five full years and beautifully boxed and yours absolutely Free when you open a new No Service Charge Checking Account."

The cases and pens are marked "Arpege and Chanel No 5. 14 kt Gold Exclusive Design."

Please understand that the pens are only plated with 14kt gold and not made up of solid gold.

Neither Chanel nor Lanvin manufactured these pens and the perfume used to scent the ink inside is questionable at best. I don;t think the two perfume companies even approved of the usage of their perfumes name in the selling of these pens.

A 1972 the A.T. Cross Company sued Jonathan Bradley Pens, Inc. for trademark infringement and unfair competition over the use of the name Lacrosse pens .It was also "brought out at the hearing that defendants distribute and sell pens with "Chanel #5" and "Arpege" printed on them, that they have not secured permission from the owners to use these marks, and have not advised the owners of defendants' use."

So, the perfumed pens were probably only manufactured between 1971-1972 or so, but they appear to have been sold and given away in the thousands as you can regularly find these on ebay any given week.

These pens were in my aunts collection of jewelry and I was interested in the history and value of the collection. Here are some pictures that I've taken of the pens and would be happy to hear any comments regarding the collection. Thanks!
