Hello. I am just wondering if anyone can tell me about my new clock? Here's what I know about it...
Seth Thomas 1928 Tabour Clock with a Westminster chime (#90).
I have never owned an antique clock and have no other info on this one. I picked it up from the original owner, the clock is in excellent shape and still works. I was wondering how many were made, or how rare it is today? I am also curious if there is a book value for this antique clock? I'm not sure if I paid too much or too little, $250? Thanks in advance for sharing additional info and helping a new guy...
Your Seth Thomas Chime Clock No 90 is circa 1928. Tran Duy Ly valued the clock at $375 in 2004 for a mint, original condition example in good running order.
You didn't get a steal but if the clock is in excellent condition it sounds like you got a very good deal, especially if you're happy with it. It's a beautiful clock that uses a very reliable Seth Thomas Westminster Chime No. 124 Movement.
I don't know how many were made, but it does show up from time to time on Ebay. I'm interested in Tambour ("Napolean Hat", "Camel Back", "Humpback") Mantel Clocks and I've seen this model four times so far this year, and of course I don't catch everything. I wouldn't call it rare but one in excellent, mint original condition is not common either (in my experience that's true of the vast majority of antique clocks). Here are some wide ranging auction results which generally reflect the condition of the specimen (but not always):

Enjoy your "new" chiming clock! I think that they have a marvelous presence about them. Don't forget that like any mechanical device with many moving parts, these types of clock do require good, periodic maintenance if you want to use them as they were intended to be used.
Still out there? I got one just like it. What more do you need to know to solve your mystery?
