I have a lot of this type of jewelry from my great great grand mother. Why are there no identification marks, such as on the gold? It looks like solid gold. The black is very shiney. Just now interested in all my mom's antiques that she left me. Any info would be helpful. I see that there is a lot of this jewelry around. Thanks

As you can see: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/26877-mourning-juwelry-brooch-and-earrings?in=user I own also some jewels like yours and neither they are marked. They proofed to be gold and the black stone could be either Onyx or black glass. My idea is that they are Onyx.
In the 19th century there were a lot of jewels, silver and gold not marked.
But that doesn't say anything about the quality of the metal. The best thing you can do is to go to your jewelry and let it examined. They can tell what stone it is and also if it is gold or not.

Thanks for the comment. There aren't any antique jewelers around here. The only ones work with huge diamonds or really fancy things. I have just started researching these things and maybe I'll find out more. Again, thanks so much!
