One of my mothers tea sets ,it has two different sized pots ,4 cups and saucers plus a cream and sugar. On the bottom of each cup there is a womans face visible only when held up to the light. The surface is highly decorated and some detailing is raised (piped ?) and has gold finish on it. My mother has owned this set for approx 25 yrs any information on its history would be wonderful.

Also wondering if the process to hide the faces in the bottom of the cups has a specific name or term ?? Is this used anywhere else in porceline manufactoring?

The picture in the bottom of the cups are called lithophane. Check this site. http://www.lithophane.org.uk/japanese/japanese.html
