Can anyone help me identify what this is? It has a charming painted face
and appears to be really old. I am not a collector so would apprediate any
    information. Thanks

Yes it is a German clock from the Black Forest. It is made by farmers during the winter season in the 19th century.
I have a clock like that. You can find them easily here in The Netherlands.
I bought mine last year for 115 euro (= ± 150 US dollars)

It looks like it might be a Kroeger Clock.

Wall clock from Schwarzwald area, Black Forest. Cottage clock.
These clocks have been made for a long time(1790-1920).
      Oldest have wooden clock gears.
