This beautiful and fine pendant, chain, and earrings set is probably one of the first costume jewelry offerings issued by the U.S. Captitol Historical Society, founded in 1962. The foundation of the historical society coincided with the completion of the 33' extension of the East portico of the Capitol building that began construction in 1958. The pendant and earrings depicts the new portico extension, thus the set can be dated between 1962 and 1970 based on my preliminary research. As noted from the second picture, there is a printshop typo in the word Capitol that instead reads Capital. There is no information about this set or the typo, but it could be speculated that by the foundation of the historical society, people were not certain about whether the historical society's mission was the Capitol building or the Capital city. Please, if you have other ideas let me know.
This rather exquisite set was acquired through the estate sale of an old 1800's house in a Chicago suburb. By the time I arrived to the sale, almost everything was sold. The set was found in a paper bag filled with fashion jewelry and the pieces of the set were entagled with the other pieces. Who knows what the fate of these vintage pieces had been, if I had not rescued them. I'm happy to have found them for the potential historical value as one of the first mementos issued by the newly founded historical society and the just built Capitol building extension.
