This weekend, I attended the Gatsby Summer Afternoon, hosted by the Art Deco Society of California. The idea is to re-create an elegant afternoon 1920s party like the ones Jay Gatsby would host in F. Scott Fitzgerald's famed novel. Everything at the party, from the clothing to the cars, had to look or feel like the time between 1920 and the '40s pre-World War II.
Every year, there's a vintage grocery truck on display, featuring items you might have been able to buy in '20s and '30s. This year's included:
-Jolly Time Brand Pop Corn, from Sioux City, Iowa, "The World's Choicest: Especially selected, cured and graded by the World's Largest Exclusive Pop Corn Dealers. Delicious-Nutritious Satisfying."
-Hollister's Rocky Mountain Tea for the Treatment of Constipation, from Madison, Wisconsin. "A Thoro Herb Laxative. No Narcotics or Alcohol In This Remedy." 35 cents!
-A Kerr self-sealing Mason jar.
-Gold Band Roasted Coffee from Silver Creek, N.Y.. "Roasted and Serviced Fresh Only by Howson Coffee Co."
-A box of Golden Spears California Carrots.
-Compound Herb Tea No. 9 by Dr. Lyncha A. Johnson.
-Year Round Self Rising Pancake Flour.
-Lipton's Tea, "Largest Sale in the World, Over Two Million Packages Sold Weekly."
-Universal Ucco Castoria
