I have a drill driver I believe it is. .. took a while to clean it out until I was able to uncover the engraving on it.

    is this anything special ?

Since I do a lot of arts and crafts and am always in need of a drill for random stuff my husband just surprised me with a brand new drill of my own ( I guess he got tired of me going to his truck borrowing his tools ) he got me a DeWalt XRP Series 18V I think is phenomenal the contrast between the old and the new, what ya guys think... I read about the GooDell brothers and after they became the Pratt Company ToolSmith just very interesting stuff.

This type of drill was for larger bits, you placed the flat top piece against your chest for extra pressure.

I was able to find out that this is a GOODELL PRATT NO. 5 1/2B HAND AND BREAST DRILL, Pat. Mar 31, 1896 stamped on the crank handle. Two speeds (3.83 to 1, and 1.33 to 1) changed by turning the shifter knob. Three-jaw chuck will hold round bits from 0 to 3/8 inches. Length is 14 1/2 inches, G+

Apparently market value/goes for very little.

      Thank you.

Your mystery is solved then, as for value it is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It is a wonderful old hand tool, I have never seen a two speed hand drill, it would have been perfect for drilling large bore holes in wood with an expandable spade bit.

      Thank you.

It is a beautiful old drill. I am lucky to be able to enjoy it and preserve it.
