This weekend, I attended the Gatsby Summer Afternoon, hosted by the Art Deco Society of California. The idea is to re-create an elegant afternoon 1920s party like the ones Jay Gatsby would host in F. Scott Fitzgerald's famed novel. Everything at the party, from the clothing to the cars, had to look or feel like the time between 1920 and the '40s pre-World War II.
Picnic baskets, pillows, McCall's magazine, golf clubs, badminton rackets, a beaded purse, and silverware. Anyone know more about these items?
I love those green picnic baskets ( and have six or seven of them now). They were made in the same pattern and style from the 1930s-1960s...with a wooden "pie shelf" inside. The outsides changed little over the years, but the dishes that came with them are the difference! The ones from the 30s and 40s were wood utensils and tin plates. Then in the late 50s and 60s they were pink, yellow, turquoise plastic .
In the 50s and 60s they could be purchased with S & H Green Stamps or Blue Chip Stamps!
At the Gatsby Summer Afternoon we would never use the bright turquoise and pink plastic plates but the baskets are classic!
I'm going to have to look for one of those!
So envious, I love the Gatsby Era. What an awesome tribute. Wish I could have been there.
