"It" is made of wood and the attached scalloped part is metal. There is a hole at the 2 pointed ends. The second picture shows it laying flat so that the shape of the scalloped part shows (it is a half circle). This was found in my grandmother-in-law's shed 30 plus yrs. ago and I still don't know what it is !! Thank you so much for any help.
I think it's the top half of a cue rack.
That's a real possibility ! My husband's uncles were in the construction business and probably tore down old buildings to remodel or rebuild. What would the bottom half of the rack looked like? Thank you so much !! Sue
How did you figure that out? Were these common in pool halls? and in what years were these popular?
I am guessing that it is part of an antique clothes drying rack. Long wood slats would have been put into each of the slots.
I think it could be a cast whip holder.
Looking at this more closely, I think cokefan is correct in that it is part of a close drying rack.
Thanks to everyone for your ideas. If it was a clothes drying rack, it could have had only 2 or 3 slats to hang clothes on. The cast part is a semi circle shape which would have made slats going out in all directions in a fan shape.
Sue, the slats would make a half fan shape. 2 or 3 slats is not very efficient for drying clothes. I believe it is a clothes drying rack and I have seen other people selling them as that.
Wow! What a puzzler. But I would have to agree with cokefan. I started searching (instead of doing my work....lol) and found this site. There is one similar to yours and slats missing too. Hope it helps and/or gives you more leads. Keep us posted!

I understand now ! I thought before that you meant this was one end of a drying rack and that the slats would fit between the two ends. You're saying slats would fit into each hole and make a fan shape and there would be 9 slats for hanging. The slats would probably have a hook or something to hook onto the openings on the rack. Thank you so much ! I have shown that to so many people and never got any reasonable ideas.
Thank you Bonnie for that site !! There is a rack on there that is very similar to mine and I definitely think my mystery is solved !! I have looked and looked at this since 1969 when my mother-in-law gave it to me because she knew I liked "old stuff". She had no idea what it was. I've had it hanging on a wall in different rooms over the years and it was always a conversation piece. Thank you !!!!!
