We are a former tunneling company and I fould this old phone on a shelf. Our company must have used this phone back in the day. The phone is a Kellogg S. & S. Co. phone. The name is shown in raised casted iron letters on the front of the cast iron lid opening. The following numbers ( 2490 ) are shown in raised casted iron numbers on the back side of the cast iron body. I would appreciate any information regarding this phone, for example, ( year it was made, main application for use .. etc .. ). This phone weighs 80 pounds and the cast iron body has the following dimensions ( 9" wide X 16" tall X 10" deep ). Please email me (Andrew) at conequipco@aol.com with any information. Thank You!
I have one just like it. Mine came out of the homestake mine in Lead SD.
Your Kellogg mine phone model 4883 (later called weatherproof telephone) was manufactured from 1918 on. In there 1926 catalog it states "These telephones are intended for use in mines, railroad yards, street railways, and for out door use". I have seen these weatherproof phones used as Police & Fire call boxes.
