Hi there,
I've begun collecting antique silver, I began just over a month ago and have gathered up a nice size collection already, overall i saved hundreds just by educating myself on what to look for and in some cases being more knowledgeable than those selling the items. I find the hunt exiting and the variation of the hallmarks and the stories they tell interesting. I am still on the hunt who knows what i'll find next!
good collection. I find myself gravitating toward older silver too. I have quite a few pieces.
Hi Mike,
Since you're just starting to collect, you may want to read my Silver Care Guide: http://www.hermansilver.com/care.htm. My guide will eliminate any confusion as to what polishes to use, and, more importantly, which ones to stay away from.
Good luck!
Hello Mike...I'm new to this site, and have not yet, posted any of my sterling pieces, but happened upon your page here.
Simply my two-cents, but the compound I've been using, for over 10 years, for polishing all of my sterling, is called, "Simichrome Polish", made in Germany, by Happich - [a solf paste polish, which is very aggressive, but NOT abrasive!] This product, is a dream to use, as it's quick, non-scratching, and produces stunning results.
You can find this product, at your local, finer Antiques dealers, or even at a local Harley Davidson, motorcycle dealer. Yes! HD has used this product, to maintain the nice, mirror-like shine, on their tail-pipes, and other chrome parts!
