My mom left this to me when she passed away and I have no idea what it is............a time piece of some sort? Needs cleaning, has 2 stamps on the back. Can anyone identify what it is and what it's used for?

    Thanks :-)

I saw that you posted this over on Ruby lane -- and added some larger photos, which gave me a better look at this piece.

The subject matter on the front is the Boar Hunt scene from Cervantes' DON QUIXOTE

I think the inside is perhaps a sundial, but I am not sure, and I am not a jewelry expert, so I can't tell what the mark is. If you could make out what the mark says, please tell us.

There is an INSCRIPTION inside the lid, that looks like initials and a date - along with the words STILL LOOK UP AT THE STARS -- you should tell us here what it says, exactly. I do not think it is an exact Don Quixote quote, but Don Q did reach for the stars.

There are 2 marks on the back. One says "GOLD" and the other one is very rough and primitive and looks to me like it is a "1X". Have no idea what that means. The inside cover is inscribed with "5/88 E.F. STILL LOOK UP AT THE STARS A.A." The inscription looks like it was professionally done, and I have no way of knowing who the E.F, and A.A. are, or if the 5/88 was an original inscription or just added later when it was given to someone........or from 1988, or 1888, etc.
