This trunk was given to me by my aunt and thought to be junk. I recently started researching it a bit, found out that it is a peice Au Depart or trunk collector might like to have. Dont know much about trunks and what I should do with it. Restore? Keep? etc. Would like more info about it and its eara, history and value. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Large waterfall style; metal clad with leather corners. I would guess the date to be 1900-1920. This larger style, metal clad is not in very high demand and do not have the appeal of the normal steamer, dome or round top trunks. Still a pretty cool item to use as a table or for storage. Value unrestored is minimal ($50 or so). Hope this helps.
In all due respect I believe this trunk is not a metal clad trunk -- it appears to be covered in canvas. This is a really nice well made French trunk. Those are beautiful brass latches. The corner slat covers are probably brass as well along with the rivets. When polished up they really shine. I have a similar French trunk that I took the canvas off, stained the wood and it looks spectacular! The contrast with the steel banding and wood would look great. These trunks are a cut above the standard trunks that are out there. There is a higher level of craftsmanship on them and higher end finishes. A real beauty!
