I usually deal in collectible costume jewelry. This I picked up many years ago, but it is nothing like anything I've ever seen, so I've never posted it.

Okay, this looks primitive. The "beads" are glass, but actually look handmade, like thumb-pressed. Someone said the claw-like things are probably seeds. It is very heavy. The longer strand is about 28" and the "beads" range around 1" in diameter. I have no idea where to list, how to identify it. Any ideas?

Maybe some kind of ceremonial tribal piece????????? When I first saw it I thought it was a belt. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get it? As someone who also deals with vintage costume jewelry I feel your pain. If it is some kind of antiquity and you listed it as costume you could be loosing $1,000.
I'm sure someone here will be able to at least give you a starting point for research. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. I think I picked it up at a yard sale in Ormond-by-the-Sea, Florida, but that's just a general memory; no clue regarding from who or exactly where. I should have set up and done a regular pic on necklace display, but my scanner was handy and I was lazy. Perhaps I should look into museums who answer questions online. I'll try to find info on them.

UPDATE 11/15 - I've been contacting "experts" and am coming up with conflicting replies. So far: Nepal and Tibet, typical of the Himalayas - Indian (as in India), glass beads - African in origin or Islamic!!! I'm still awaiting more replies, so I will post them as they come in.

Got another vote for India and one of the seeds identified as Devil's Claw!

It is just costume jewelry made in South Africa sold at Pier 1 for $19.99. It is nothing to be over excited about.

Well, son of a gun! Thank you so very much - it's unbelievable none of the "experts" knew that. Guess I'll be listing it sometime soon. Hey, this has been fun!
