This P-51 "mustang" is made from brass scraps and sits on top of 3 IN MK7 US Navy shell base. It was originally made as an ashtray.

The plane and shell base are in excellent condition with one missing cigarette rest.

The P-51 is an uncommon subject in WW2 trench art.

It is unusual to find trench art planes that aren't P-38s!

I do like the P-38s (I have at least 20 examples) but for every 50, I might see one of another type aircraft.

      Scott, Hello!
I always thought the P-38 was popular because it was easier to balance in this configuration. :) Plus it was a pretty bad ass plane.
This Mustang is really cool. I am green with envy.
      Merry Christmas Scott.

      Thanks AmberRose.

I agree, the P-38 is a great airplane. I think the predominance of the P-38 has to do with the popularity of the plane and location of the trench art builders. The P-38 was predominantly a Pacific theater aircraft and the US Navy Construction Battalions (CB or SeaBees) were also predominantly in the Pacific. In the Pacific, there were also many shipboard shops that interacted more regularly with other troops.

Merry Christmas to you as well.

Thanks again AmberRose-- when you have time take a look at the other trench art items I have posted. There are several other airplanes and early aviation related pieces.
