This is an Elgin Pocket watch that still works.

The back plate comes off and on the inside of it there are machined-engraved markings: "Brookline guaranteed 14 karat golf filled". It includes a number "4567000"

There are also some hand-engraved numbers as well:

    7756F 17174F

On the back side of the watch itself, it says

    "Elgin National Watch Co. USA"
    27550603

    15 Jewels

    Unsolved Mystery

You have a beautiful piece. I wanted to share some information with you and hope it helps. The serial number of the watch is the 27550603 number. Elgin mainly used numbers for their serial numbers in the early manufacturing days. It wasn't until years later, when production grew rapidly, that they substituted the first 2 numbers with letters. Based on your serial number this watch was manufactured around 1924. The "15 jewels" are 15 bearings made of ruby or synthetic sapphires that act as bearing for the gears. They were used in mechanical watches to reduce friction and wear. There is a very useful book entitled, " The Complete Price Guide To Watches", by Cooksley Shugart, Tom Engle and Richard Gilbert. It may assist you with determining the value of your watch. Again, you have obtained a beautiful timepiece.

Thank you both so much! Sorry for the typo above - the watch is obviously not "golf" filled. The watch belonged to my husband's father.

Toolate2 - the website won't load. Perhaps it is having some temporary problems. I will try again later. Thank you.
