Ok Here is some more, Salem Gazette newspaper retyped many years ago explaining the historic day for Salem Ma , and their guest of Honor Col Perley Putnam What a wonderful speech by him near the bottom, He had Salem soldiers in the war of 1812 in Maine read the story great one, the British still wanted Maine in 1912, he was sent with 100 men from Salem, he was in charge. the British had a lot of ships and their largest one on the coast as Putnam's men were to fight with Maine men, they would destroy the town with cannons, so he surrendered the town, and all soldiers were captured but the town was saved. The story says any man who would not lay down weapons and say they loved the king would by killed.I think thats the story anyway he returned a hero to Salem was mayor for a while Beloved there when the civil war soldiers left as you read this he remember years ago the same Salem men fighting. He left this snuff box 2-3 inch and this letter.Republican pins left by all Putnam/Cook women for 100 years
