I would like to know when it became unfashionable for women to dress like this? And more importantly Why?????????????? People often look at me like I'm crazy when I wear a full skirt like these. This last weekend for the first time I actually felt uncomfortable wearing vintage!:(
Don't get me wrong, I often get compliments because of my vintage look.
But for some reason a woman in a dress, high heels and a beautiful coat
has become socially awkward and inappropriate.
    Thanks for letting me vent!

It's not you...it's them. Keep dressing with style and grace.
I ask; why did it become acceptable appear slovenly in public?
    6. Chrysalis, 13 years ago
Some of us know how to still dress classy, like ladies. Sadly, a majority people thinks it's okay to dress like slobs, or worse so tartly. Nothing is left to the imagination, more skin the better. Chin up ladies, some of us still remember what it means to be a lady.

I love vintage and retro... anything from the 40's to the 70's. I recently came back from a 5 day cruise with my hubby for his Birthday. I had packed several vintage evening purses and jewelry ready to dress to the nines with style and grace. The dress that I wore on the evening of elegance (which they only had one by the way), was a vintage inspired cocktail dress (with large panel pleats) which dropped just below the knee. I wore a set of vintage pearls, pearl screwback earrings and had a beautiful pearl brooch which I used to hold the wrap just so that it draped across the front nicely.

It was amazing to me the looks and compliments we got along with the looks (on the sly from women who were dressed somewhat differently). I've never been one to wear skin tight, body hugging dresses as I was taught to leave something to the imagination and let class, style and grace prevail. My mother was a dresser and I'm so glad that she instilled this in me. Keep on dressing with elegance, style and grace, you never know who's watching and how it may positively influence another woman or young lady to look at herself with a little more respect and to dress accordingly.

      Just my 2 cents...

I say dress in whatever way makes you happy and comfortable. Don't judge others any more than you would want to be judged by them.

The two movies for me that really stick out for great clothing are Rear Window and White Christmas.

I love to wear vintage I feel elegant and feminine and frankly lovely --I place little value on what other people think about me wearing vintage.

Have confidence that you are classy and have good taste and know how to wear well.

Daughter (21) wears this type of vintage clothing, & attracts much admiration. You may wear what you like as long as it's legal & decent, I would suggest!! Go vintage!!

Thank you for an opportunity to express the thoughts of not only mine but my husbands. We both grew up altho 8 years apart>he grew up respecting the female,I grew up that a female had to dress approprietly. The women's movement ,the hippie thing, the pill changed alot of thingsFree love and all that jazz.Suddenly all the rules were broken.I was taken aback when even my own parents in their 60" were suddendly dressing mod.my Father had the pork chop sideburns. As young female I did not always like wearing the girdle or being cold because girls could not wear pants in grade school or high school. Why did I have to be cold?I wonder today how did the ladies survive all that winter air?In today's home gas prices how could anyone afford wearing the dresses our Mom's or Grandma wore?I love the fashions of the time.Men respected women-women were their own downfall. Now we have mostly slobs everywhere we go like the WalMart people.Flipfops and tube tops in church.Give me a break. An d for what it's worth girls when you gave it all away for nothing you wonder why men don't care?If you don't care they don't either.

Thank you all for the comments and words of encouragement. After reading everyone's comments I must admit I feel a little silly. I have never been a person that cares about what others think of me. Thank you all again for reminding me that the only opinion that matters is that of my own. I am on way to the grocery store and my son has a band concert tonight, I shall wear some of my finest clothing and take the extra time to set my hair in hot rollers. I will go to town with my head held high and look forward to any & all glances, looks or comments positive or negative. Thank you all again.
