Hi, this is another jug I have, same questions as before, how can I tell if this is authentic Majolica Character Jug, it is numbered 78891 and looks like 65 on the bottom.

Experience is the only real way to tell and both of your pieces are real. from the pale blue interior to the almost airbrush look to the glaze and rosy cheeks. All tell tale marks of Sarreguemines majolica from France. Not all of their pieces were marked. Especially the majolica. It is sort of a fifty fifty deal with their majolica. Their transfer ware was only marked 90% of the time. I think it is merely because they were very busy during the late victorian era and just didn't take the time and it was before items needed marked to enter the U.S. market. I have yet to see a fake with that pale bluish interior color. The same way with their majolica green gold fruit plates. Not all marked but so distinctive that no one else ever matched it.

Retro 597, thanks so much for the info, I have since found out that these jugs belonged to my mother in law's mother, my mother in law is now 92 and she remembers them always being in the cupboard to put papers and stuff in. She doesn't know where they came from, just that she remembers them always being in the cupboard. She has another one but the handle is broke and she uses it for a door stop, bless her heart, thanks so much.
