Grand Rapids & Indiana brass top bell bottom railroad lantern made by the Adams & Westlake Co., in Chicago in the late 1870's. The lantern is prominently marked G.R.&.I.R.R. The underside of the base bears Wm Westlake 1873 patent dates. The chimney features a sliding collar to secure the globe and permit varying globe heights common among early no. 39 globes made by a variety of glass manufacturers. This classic, single guard, no. 39 lantern has a bayonet mounted base. The cobalt blue, exended base globe is etched GR&IRY, completing this scarce and desirable Michigan RR lantern.
