I'm wondering if anyone knows something about this old cigarette lighter. It's brass and has an arrow pointing up and also has a chain on the bottom that has a metal tag at the end of the chain with a #1828 on it.
It's very unusual.
Popularly called a "trench lighter"-- came into prominance during WW1.
The casing slides up (with the arrow) and shields SOME of the flame from sight.
These are heavily reproduced.
Your lighter has a nice patina to it and looks older, but I would doubt it is WW1 era. I don't recall seeing the arrow on the earliest ones.
I don't know the significance of the tag or numbers.

Thanks Scott, I appreciate the info.
