These keys were found aboard a surrendered German u boat when the boat surrendered to the U.S. Navy at the Portsmouth naval shipyard during the second week of May 1945. Six u boats surrendered at Portsmouth within the span of three days, but I don't know which boat these keys came from. The keys opened personal lockers, food storage compartments, and anything else that needed to be locked. Kasten translates to box and/or case. The sailor who gathered the keys put them on a dogtag chain.I wonder what happened to all the other keys missing between Kasten 1 and 49?
