I purchased the deals for under $10 a few years ago at a rummage/yard sale in New Bedford, MA. I'm not a doll collector but they caught my eye and decided to pick them up. I've been trying to get some information on them - mainly what time period they're from, what they may have been used for, where they came from, what culture's clothes are they wearing, etc.
The one on the left seems to be Inuit looking. The body is plastic the eyes that open/close depending on if she's standing up or not. Some of her jacket is real fur, the grey (sleeves) seems fake. A friend who knows about dolls says it looks like something that was maybe mass-produced to be sold to tourists.
The one on the right seems to be European, maybe eastern or Basque or Portuguese. Body is plastic, legs have black shoes and tights. The head doesn't seem to be made out of plastic but a different material. Aforementioned friend says he thinks it may have been a fashion doll for older children or something to display cultural rites of passage.
Both the dolls seem somewhat old to me - from the later part of the 20th century. (maybe 70's-80's?)
That's all I really know, if you'd like more pictures from different angles just ask.
