You have a WWII German Iron Cross 2nd class which was awarded for bravery. It is most likely of 3 piece construction, with the black painted cross, made of iron, sandwiched between two silver frames. This would be neatly soldered, and wet sanded for a smooth, brilliant finish. If I were you, I would not clean it, for it has a nice natural patina that shows its age. The ribbon is not original to the cross though. The wide center band of the ribbon should be red, next to the red a thin white stripe, and next to this a thin black stripe. The ribbon that is attached to the cross is meant for a War Merit Cross 2nd class. Over 2 million of these were awarded through the course of the war.
