Ok, I get it....we have technology. Press a button and a book appears; can't find what you want, GOOGLE it. Yeah, easy-peasy. HOWEVER, nothing can replace the feel of a book in your hands--the roughness of the pages, the smell of old paper, the thought that at least one, but probably a handful or more, of people have enjoyed the exact book that you are holding in your hands! My 10 year old wants a Kindle and I will not budge. I will buy any book she would like (as evidenced by the wall of books in her room), but I refuse to let technology take over the simple joy of reading a book!

And now that I have climbed off of my soapbox, here's what a dollar buys you these days (yep, one single, solitary dollar)...

Life and Teachings of Jesus, copyright 1898

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, copyright 1886, with a signature on the inside cover that reads "D L Love, Sep. 1896"

My Church, A Yearbook of the Augustana Synod of North America, dated 1938. The inside cover has this note--"LaVorne Kuppig Perfect Attendance at Church for Four Years, Trinity Lutheran Sunday School, Wilbur N. Paturquists Pastor, Omaha, March 5, 1939".

Crusade in Europe by Dwight D. Eisenhower, copyright 1948

A Book of English Literature, dated 1927, with a signature on the inside cover that reads "Helen B. Baker, University of Arizona, Tucson, Sept. 15th, 1927"

I just love the history in these books! How do ya put that into a Kindle?!

I love my Nook and iPhone, but my husband is on your side. He also has to have the "real thing" in his hands. I do think it's a shame, however, that some high schools (and even elementary schools) have given iPads to their students so that all of the textbooks can be read on the iPad. It's a different world out there today!

Appreciate the comment marcobabe13. Schools are talking about doing that here too, but I hope that they do not do it! Thanks for the likes Laureniscontent and ThriftyGypsy!

Sad thoughts of how many libraries of books were destroyed as the crusades marched around tring to make their religious beliefs the sole survivor of knowledge in the world...
