A wonderful piece of Sabino Opalescent Glass. I've not seen another male nude by Sabino, and was told that Sabino never made a "David"
This is signed on the bottom of the base.
Any help with info on this item.
Year? Has to be pre WWII as it was bought prior to my friend coming home from Europe. So I've been told.
Anyone seen another "David" by Sabino?
Thanks.
Just added a picture of the mark on the bottom of David, and a picture of David next to a ruler, hope this help.
Like most great artist; reproductions of Sabino’s wares using the Original moulds have been made since the 1960 and are still made in America today. Marius-Ernest Sabino (1878-1961) produced a wide range of vases, statuary, and lighting from c.1923 until the closure of his glassworks in 1939. After going broke mass production signed copies flooded the market with highly stylized figures of women. Never seen the nude male and the milky blue colour makes me think it is original from the late 1930's before all his designs were stollen by American corporate entrepreneur's. Most copies are etched Sabino France or K.B. Italy on the bottom. Again I stress; never seen a male.
This was bought in France right after the war. It was brought back to the states in the in the early 1946 when my friend was returned to the States. He had it up to his death, and as a friend of the family, I was allowed to buy several items from the Estate before the public. My friend and his partner ran a small antique shop in Toledo in thier later life.
The pictures really doesn't do this justice...I would post a picture of the mark, but you can't read it as it fades out in the white.
The signature is correct; high value item.
