#482B Patent #224,482 February 10, 1880 by Hiram B. Scutt of Joliet, Illinois. Barb is driven through wood block. The original "Burma Shave". The patent states that the wire could be used for advertising by afixxing cardboard letters to the blocks. They could also be painted bright colors to make them more visible. The one pictured has tinges of red paint remaining.
