I have always been interested in the Hopi carving techniques. Finally, I got up the nerve to try my own katsina carving, following the exacting, sacred
rules the Hopi culture takes pride in. My first, was a balsa wood block...
(not shown). Next, I went to a bass wood carving...(not shown). With family and friends telling me .."More please..." I ordered cottonwood root and these 'four' are the result. I have found, researching each one is very exciting, maintaining important features each spirit characteristically has.
All are made from the same piece of wood, no copying....ever. I look at two or three others to compile needed coloring and accessories that each seem to be of a mandatory 'look'. Every symbol on their garments is a true Hopi
rendition.
