Note says watch was given to my great-grandfather in 1905 (he would have been around 60 at the time) it has no serial numbers or markings. Can anyone identify the approximate year that it might have been made?

If it is an elgin, I believe it is , the movement will be numbered, open the back carefully and take picture of the movement or write down the serial # engraved on the movement. Then either me or some of the others on here(Collectors Weekly) will be very happy to date this wonderful timepiece for you. Again nice watch, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Kerry---it is an elgin--the picture doesn't show it because the hands are frozen over the name---I will have someone remove the back and see if there is serial # engraved on the movement. I'd realy like to add it to the frame the includes my husband's grandfather's pocket watch (a mere youth at 1912 and give it to my son.

This watch is probably a level set watch, This means that the basil and crystal are removed and a small lever will be on the side of the case, pulling this lever out to the stop, will let the hands move while turning the stem. This lever should be at the 2 oclock position

The numbers from inside the case back are 9495809 (21 jewels)

That number dates it at 1901, if this is the movement number, , Sorry for typo on lever as AR pointed out, had it right in the next sentence, but was wrong and I'll admit same..... Thanks Kevin for pointing that out.
