2" by 1" My Wifes realtive went to the gold rush 1n last 1840s with his brother came back east before the Civil War, This was saved over the years My wife though the gold piece was solid gold and a real diamond. Which is not a solid gold piece, but has anyone seen these before, Total weight is 2 oz

But I've just seen another example on ebay where the owner claims that there was a connection to Hoover Dam.
We have Mary Tibbets diaries from 1887 when she traveled on the ship around the world a few times. They went to Melbourne ever year, so maybe this came from Australian this years
Melbourne was the closest port in those days to Bendigo, Ballarat and Beechworth, the centres of the southern gold rush in the 1850' and 1860's. It could well be that either Mary or Charles Tibbets picked up the brooch while on a Pacific rim trip on the Southern Cross or the Sea Witch.
These diaries of her trips sound very interesting. Documents of this type are rare and have significance for historians. Is the piece of scrimshaw related to the Southern Cross or the Sea Witch?
Sea Witch this clipper ship is the second Sea Witch ship made. Made in N.Y. Tibbets didn't own this ship ever. His father also Capt Henry Tibbets possible worked with slave ships my wife told me. No one talks about him we have a few portraits of hm. The diaries are wonderful beautiful clear writing with a pencil. Reading these i understand that in Cape Town, Cochin, Port Elizabeth, Colombo, Melbourne, 1 trip To Rio De Janeiro. They had friend there and loaded the ship up to bring to other Towns , tough to make $ then.She traveled around towns with the captains wife's who lived there, I bet after all traveling a lot of weathly men moved back to these town to retire rich. 1 page they had dinner in Hong
