Hi. Looking for a nice original coca-cola sign for a gift. I do not want to pay "original price" for a repo. I can't tell on this one - not an expert or even a novice on this. I saw a post here that looked like this one and someone here said it is a repo. So not sure.

    Thx.

Hi NewCoke, This sign pictured has been up for auction on eBay more than once with no takers.

Yeah, OK, makes me wonder... I don't see the fading I'd expect and the back looks too pristine. Were they painted white originally? Could also be restoration but front looks like maybe a decent repro? Maybe 30-40 years old?

I would also mention that, no matter what, it isn't "repo". It could possibly be a "repRo" if it is a *reproduction* sign, but unless it was repossessed at some point, it certainly isn't a "repo". With that being said, it does look like a reproduction sign probably from the '80s. Maybe Perry (signaholic) - the resident Coke sign expert - will be able to weigh in later for a more definitive answer.

That used to annoy me ay-- but its use is so common that it has become accepted. "Repro", "Repo", "Repop" are all commonly used to described reproduction items.

I collect Civil War and 50% or more of Confederate items are "repro"!

Depending on what area of the country your from, Repo can be short for Repoduction. :)

it's all products of an abbreviated society, lol.

These were made in the late 90's.

Thank you ay but I'm not really an expert, earlycoke or TGBWC certainly are though and I believe that what TGBWC is dead on! People do this sort of thing all the time to try and sell you on a repro sign.

Yeah, pretty obvious to those of us who have been at it a while.

Spend your money on an authentic sign. This one is a fake. Simply put.

Thanks so much for the fast replys! This site saved me from a bad purchase. I may get one of this type of repro in addition to an authentic older original, but NOT one priced and advertised as original! I do love the colord and faded look of these, and some are $20 or so - not bad to put over the basement "bar" (really just used for kids, so lots of Coke in it usually).

I sent a few questions to the seller, pointed out that I've been told it's likely a repro and he doesn't reply to my eBay questions now. I assume he already knew it was a repro, because IF it were what he claimed, I now know from watching other auctions that it would be gobbled up for his opening bid of $150. It would be in VG shape for a true original, large, nice content and colors.

I looked at the ebay wording on the sign, he is using Vintage Coca-cola 1915, that is not a true statement. Email and contract your bid. Notify ebay of your reason.

Also he state in the date of creation, early 1900s, 1915 thereabouts.

I didn't bid on this, so I'm not out any $$$. I am looking at others on eBay though - some pretty cool old coke signs.
    15. NewCoke, 13 years ago
Well, it sold to someone for $151. I've followed quite a few auctions recently and IF that was a legit original in that shape from the time period claimed it would have fetched over $300. Someone got screwed... but is is a cool looking sign.

Sadly this type of thing happens regularly on ebay.

It is a minefield for new collectors.

I often see reproductions bring good money in the militaria category as well.

I am sympathetic toward the buyers, but a lot of times some research/ reference books/ asking knowledgeable collectors would spare folks.

I am glad to see that you asked here NewCoke!

      Scott
