I believe Inga Olsen (1861 - 1893) to be of Norweigan descendant..can I date this sampler as 1875--I don't know the significance of that date she cross stitched --I may have her 1861 birthdate wrong but the death date is solid.

Could that be he birthdate on the sampler? I think it was done here in the state of Minnesota.

When I got it it was a little sticky--I read up on samplers and so I bathed it in two separate pans of water. I think it was cigarette smoke no doubt..it still looks a little brown but the colors brightened a bit. Brown residue came off. The cloth was limp when it went in the water and once it dried it became stiff.

As other suggestions besides acid free back and no glare glass to frame it???

Thanks in advance for your knowledge and hints and tips!

I took a picture and scanned the second one so you could see texture and needle point clearer. THanks!

It is a sampler and beautiful ! The date would be when the girl finished it . Back in the day young women would work endless hrs on these and they are very collectible and sell high . The initials were her's . I would frame it on acid free background and matt it so material doesn't touch glass . These are treasures to be preserved . Love it I am jealous :-)

Oh and these are referred to as Alphabet samplers quite often .

Death date? How would one embroider their own death date into a sampler? I think that is the date she finished the piece. I love it ;)

By motif (sampler with animals etc.) it is date finished and often would be done between the age of 8 to 18 by girls of middle class or upper class homes. The wine bottle and carafe makes me think teen years because that would have been considered a bit much for younger.
