Hi! This trunk has been in my husband's family since at least the 1960s. We did not think it was real and it has just sat in a corner for 40+ yrs, until we received some information LV Heritage Dept indicating that it was sold in 1906. I want to preseve this trunk to pass down to our son. Having no clue about antiques and restoration, I would appreciate ANY help with the following questions:
    - How should I go about getting an official authentication and appraisal?
    - Should we have it cleaned and restored? (it has a tear on one of the sides) I've heard that in some cases cleaning/restoring could hurt the value of the item.
    - If so, does anyone have a recommendation for a antique trunk dealer/restorer in SE US?

    Any help would be appreciated!

I would get in contact with the LV heritage dept again and see if they have any restoration contacts. You are right about restorations often bringing down value, but for something like this I think it would help. If the right person does it. Beautiful piece!

I'm sure you saw Ty Pennington's new auction show the other night? They auctioned one of these and I believe when it was appraised they mentioned the pro/cons of restoration.

Thank you for your responses and suggestions! I really appreciate them! I have not seen Ty Pennington's new show but will definitely now check it out.
