Pictured is an Imperial Japanese Army type 90 steel helmet which was brought back to the states when the soldier returned home to Chicago. This helmet definitely saw combat, for the cover and helmet were pierced by schrapnel from a bomb or mortar shell. The impact was so extreme, that it ripped the seam around the bottom of the cover as well. It is rare to find a Japanese helmet with its original cover, but extremely rare to find one with batttle damage.
Tied to one of the chinstrap rings is the original paper tag which shows that the helmet was inspected by the U.S. Army Joint Intellegence Service, which then gives the owner permission to keep the item, and ship it home if he wishes.
