This is a sword from Virginia Military Institute. It is from the 1930's, and I believe it is a dress sword, but I could be wrong about about its use. Some notable alumni are: George Smith Patton, Harry F. Byrd, Jr., George Marshall, and Benjamin Franklin Ficklin, the founder of the Pony Express.

It is a dress sword-- same style (minus VMI) as used at USMA (West Point).
At West Point these are issued to First Class (Seniors), while the other classes are issued rifles.
Its use is purely ceremonial.

scottvez,
Thank you very much for the info, glad you liked it.
Lilley products are easy to date due to name changes.
"Lilley- Ames Co." puts it in the 1931- 1950 time period.
Scott
scottvez,
Well, I was on with the date, thanks again for all your info, it is appreciated.
Yes sir.
Thanks for sharing-- did you get any other VMI/ military items with this?
Any ID on the sword? The original owner served during a busy time period!
Scott
scottvez,
This belonged to my father, he graduated VMI in 1937, and went on to be the Captain of an Artillery Battery(towed 155's). He landed at Normandy(see the letter in my other photos).
Yes, I have a lot of other VMI items, my father was a pack-rat too, it runs in the family. I will post some when I get a chance.
You are lucky to have such fantastic family items.
I'll look at your other posts.

Thank you. I am very proud of my father, he died in 1992. It is very hard to imagine what those WWII soldiers went through. I was in 35th armored, M60, M60-A1 tanks and M88 Tank Recovery Vehicles, 1970-1973.
Thank you kerry10456
Your welcome, and thanks for sharing a little of your family history.
