Here is a graphite crucible from the Joseph Dixon Crucible Co. now known as Dixon Ticonderoga. I do not know what the markings "18 C" and "U461" mean, if anybody knows anything about these I am quite curious and would love to hear from you. From what I can tell it has never been heated in a furnace, I think it is probably at least 90 years old. Let me know what you think.
I worked for this company for eleven years in the engineering department. In fact I designed molds for crucibles. When I left the company in the 1980's they still were fabricating those small crucibles.Tehy are used for precious metals. There is no way I can tell their age because they could be only 30 years old.The markings refer to the size and model.I don think they had the date stamped at the bottom. They are made of graphite and silica. They were mass produced
Hello Placeteno,
Thanks for the information! I am an aspiring engineer myself, I will be graduating in about a year. It sounds like this item is not nearly as old as I was expecting. Someone who found it in the basement of an old Alaskan home gave it to me several years ago; they didn't know what it was. I thought it might have been an unused crucible from the Alaska gold rush.
I appreciate your insight, have a good evening.
