This is a very nice Portret brooch handpainted on a thin ivory plaque with a marked mount of silver in a mint condition.
But there is no signature. So I don't have any idea what exact period this could be. The locket has been changed earlier probably for safety reasons. Who has suggestions about the person and/or time?

Ivory miniatures were very popular in the 18th and early 19th century.
The advent and widespread availability of photography in the 1840s spelled the death of the miniature painter.
While there were post- photography painted miniatures made, most folks preferred an actual image over a painted likeness.
The locking latch mechanism would make me think that the brooch is later than the actual ivory miniature.
I am not as familiar with European hair and dress styles, so this may be a case of a late era miniature.

I agree that the locking mechanism is from a later date. And the hair dess is
Medieval braiding because in that time this was the standard for having your hair done. There was the three-strand braid, the four-strand braid, the twist-and-cross, and the weaving style. These were the realm of the nobility and the wives of men of means. I think this is of course no medieval painting but from a woman of that time.

The style of this painting (the eyes, the hair, and the necklace) reminds me very much of miniatures done in 1980s - 1990s in Russia or the Baltic countries (Latvia or its neighbors), but I haven't seen one done on ivory.
Thanks for your comment davyd286. I had it out of the frame and I have seen that it is handpainted on ivory so I realy suppose it is Victorian.
