Keep them out of constant direct light.

Your top row are all Daguerreotypes and date from the 1840s. Same with the one of the left middle row (as viewed). Those all appear to be Sixth plates (2 3/4" X 3 1/4").

The others look like ambrotypes (maybe tintypes) and appear to be ninth plates (2" X 2 1/2") and would date to the 1850s- 60s.

Daguerreotypes and ambrotypes are very easily scratched when even slightly touched on the surface, so I wouldn't recommend any cleaning.

These are great to have of your family. Take care with these.

Scott the best clear one is the girl with the colored cheeks, which fell apart, the glass with the emulsion on it is clean as shown, the black glass behind it is ok also. should i tape it together to keep air out?

Since it is family, I'd get a brass oval mat and keeper and put it back together as originally held.

If you look on ebay you can find one for about $10- $15.
