I inherited this old brass oil lamp, do you happen to know the brand and age. I think it's from the late 1800's
    Thank you, Julie Witter

You have part of a Rayo lamp from around 1907. The slots in the base identify it as a later model. The earlier ones had the heart-shaped cutouts in the base. These cutouts, either heart or slot, allowed the air to pass through to give proper draft to the burner. Since the air passed through the center of the lamp, these are known as "Center Draft Lamps". Your lamp is missing the flame spreader that fits in the center hole plus a chimney. You could most likely find what you need to make it a working lamp on eBay. There are reproduction filler caps available with the "Rayo" name on them. Reproduction Pyrex chimneys are also available. New wicks are available as well. Many Rayo lamps had a "spider" that fits between the burner and the oil font to hold a glass shade. These lamps produce a nice, bright light.
