I purchased this metal tray with three others at a thrift store last week. They were marked 4.00 a piece. I was looking thru them for the one in best condition, and the guy working there told me they had been on the shelf for a couple of months and I could have all of them for 5.oo . Naturally I had to have them all. At first, I could not find any type of identification on them, but I was showing them to someone at work and he was actually able to find the markings on the back. They were very, very faint, but it was U.S. NICRO, and the date 1943 ! I thought that was pretty cool. I am thinking they were probably used during WW2 and beyond. I dont remember using them when I was in the service during the 80's. I can just imagine the stories they would tell if they could talk. I would appreciate any information that anyone might have. I included photos of the back, but they are very faint.
Thanks for looking and have a great day! Thrifty Gypsy

I remember them when I was overseas in the Army in 1970-73, they were awful! If you had to eat outside and it was raining, they filled up with water while you were eating. If it was cold, you had to eat fast because the cold metal turned your food cold, and they were hard to clean, too many corners.

Thanks packrat-place for the love and the comments ! Sounds like it was not the best of dining experiences with these trays. It is a good thing they have updated their dining experiences. Thanks, Thrifty Gypsy

The metal trays were in use when I was in Germany 1961-1964, Some of the Army & Air Force units were converting over to the square fiberglass trays

I prefer these, more sanitary than fiberglass and plastic versions.
