It is quite heavy, about 15 pounds, and a full 10 inches long. My daughter and I got out her new metal detector and tried our luck on our upstate NY property. Not exactly what we were hoping for, but it is our first adventure find! Perhaps next time something not as military....
Yikes! Be careful with this thing and have it checked out experts in unexploded ordinance. People are still getting killed by digging up and handling unexploded ordinance from WWI and WWII. I strongly recommend calling the local military and reporting this find to their Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit or notifying the police/fire department. This could be an over-reaction, but better safe than sorry.
Do not, repeat DO NOT contact the local fire department or Police department. This is a WWI vintage artillery shell known as a "Bolt". It does not have a fuze, it does not contain any explosives as it is a solid piece of iron. The only danger is if you drop it on your foot. If you are still worried take it to a gun collector show and there should be someone there that can calm your fears. I have seen way too many people loose harmless relics because of unknowledgeable people confiscating something they know nothing about. I've been collecting Civil War artillery items for 30+ years.
