I think that this lamp is bronze but it could be brass. I think it is from the art nouveau period but it could be art deco. The bottom of the lamp appears to say Lightolier and Pat Pend. The lamp appears to be weighted on the bottom because it is very heavy. I don't know anything else about this lamp but I would like to know more. Any recommendations for the style of shades that would go with lamp. Other unknowns I would like to know about the lamp; age? period? value? maker? history? manufacturer? country of origin? etc. Thank you very much for your help.

Your lamp was made by the Lightolier Co. which started making lamps in 1904. It was one of the few quality lighting manufacturers to survive the Great Depression and is still in business today. Your lamp is a very early product of theirs, probably around 1910-1920. It would have had a leaded glass, slag glass or painted glass shade on it when sold. These would get broken or fall out of style and be replaced by cloth shades. The finish on yours appears to be in remarkable condition. I would find a nice shade and use it. I would put an auction value of about $125.00. I hope this helps you. You can go to http://www.lightolier.com/aboutus/history.jsp to learn more about the history of your lamp.
